ABOUT REYNOLDS FAMILY WINERY

Reynolds Family Winery’s 9-1/2 acre home vineyard sits in the shadow of Atlas Peak, just south of Stags Leap, where it enjoys cool breezes from San Pablo Bay to the south. The growing conditions there are ideal for producing big, rich, complex wines. The vineyard was first planted it in 1996 using “bench grafted vines” which were quite new back then. With bench grafting, the plants are raised at the nursery for one to two years before planting. This cuts about a year off the vine’s development, allowing it to deliver usable fruit in its fourth leaf rather than its fifth. The estate is planted entirely to Cabernet Sauvignon. It grows three clones – 337, 4 and Weimar – on two root stocks: 110R and 3309. The vines are trained in the double cordon method on a single fruiting wire and cordons trained to either side of the trunk. This configuration prevents excessive sunlight exposure so the sugars don’t run up before the grapes get a chance to fully ripen. During the growing season they drop close to half of the fruit to select only the best clusters and keep the vines in balance. They make but a single wine from this vineyard, the Estate Cabernet Sauvignon. Production runs between 1,100 and 1,400 cases, depending on the year. Reynolds Family Winery sources fruit from many vineyards in addition to their own estate with the goal of providing variety. Reynolds Family Winery is owned by Steve & Suzie Reynolds. Wine has always played a large role in Steve’s life -- from the time he was a teenager, tasting his way across Europe, to the moment, 20 years ago, when he decided to quit his day job and transform a dilapidated chicken ranch into a Tuscan-inspired winery. That winery -- Reynolds Family Wines – has since blossomed into, well, let’s call it the Reynolds Family of Wines. That’s because over the last decade Steve has launched three ground-breaking brands and has been retained by half a dozen boldface clients. His current portfolio includes: Naughty, RFW, and Imago Mundi. Today, Reynolds Family Winery has grown to around 7,000 cases. Through it all, Steve and Suzie have truly enjoyed the experience and path that has lead them to where they are today.
